BEACoN Network
What is the BEACoN Network?
The BEACoN Mentor Network is composed of faculty that participate in the BEACoN mentor program. The profiles presented are to help students identify possible mentors and help faculty get to now other members of the network. If you are a student feel free to suggest a possible mentor when you fill out the form to join the network.
Please note that this is separate from our BEACoN Research Program, which is a funded research mentoring program. To apply to become a BEACoN Research Scholar (deadline F, 11/13 at 5 pm), please click here.

Dr. Ann De Lay
Reason for Joining BEACoN
"As a first generation student myself, a university environment can be a challenging one to navigate. I was blessed to have a lot of support and I look forward to sharing that with others."
Research Interests:
- the recruitment, professional growth and retention of quality agriculture teachers
- the experiences of first generation students
- the perspectives of underserved and underrepresented populations in agricultural education
Dr. Robert A. Flores
Reason for Joining BEACoN
"As a first generation student and the first one to move away from home, I somehow was able to progress in the university environment when I went away to college. After much reflection, I realized that it was not only because of family support back home that I was able to survive and prosper, but it was mentors on campus that took the time to let me know that I was valued and on the right track toward a degree."
Research Interests:
- Leadership development
- Program development in Career Technical Education

Dr. Benjamin Ruttenberg
Reason for Joining BEACoN
"I have been teaching the 1st quarter intro bio course for freshmen bio majors. While I have generally seen many of them succeed, some have not. Since success in the 1st quarter can translate to success throughout college, I'd like to help these students succeed. In addition, I have lived in Latin America for many years and I am fluent in Spanish, so I may be particularly helpful for students from multicultural backgrounds."
Research Interests:
- Marine Ecology
- Marine Conservation
Dr. Candace Winstead
Reason for Joining BEACoN
"I am a first generation college graduate. I have personal experience with having serious financial impediments to attending school and would like to give back to those who might also be facing similar hardships. Dr. Lisa Needles
Reason for Joining BEACoN
"I believe it is important for students who are under represented in STEM to have mentors that they can identify with. While I myself am Caucasian, my daughter is African American and I am highly aware of the lack of diversity in my field and some of the issues that under represented students face to overcome the barriers to success. I want to be a part of helping to promote diversity in my field and to help students of diverse backgrounds succeed."
Research Interests:
- Marine Ecology & Conservation
Dr. Sandi Clement
Reason for Joining BEACoN
"I was a first generation college student, and I realize in retrospect that the college I attended invested time and resources into helping their first generation students succeed. I still keep in touch with several of those professors, and they have continued to serve as mentors to me. I want to be that mentor for students here at Cal Poly to help them succeed."

Dr. Alejandra Yep
Reason for Joining BEACoN:
"From my years learning, teaching and mentoring I know that your entire college experience can improve greatly if you are surrounded by a support network along the way. The BEACoN Mentors Program is one of many avenues that will help build that community around you at Cal Poly. I am an immigrant to the US (my first language is Spanish) and I know first hand how hard it can be to feel out of your element and how much a support network can help you succeed."
Research Interests
- Microbiology
- Molecular Biology
- Microbial Pathogenesis
Biomedical Engineering
Trevor Cardinal
Reason for Joining BEACoN:
I would like to serve as a mentor to help eliminate the underrepresented gap in the biomedical field, as this will mutually benefit underrepresented groups and biomedicine. A person's racial/ethnic/socioeconomic background or identity should not be a barrier to advancing their careers, and effective mentoring of underrepresented groups can help remove this barrier. Further, effective science requires diverse perspectives to make capture the true spectrum of reasonable interpretations from research studies and most efficiently advance the field. Therefore, populating the biomedical field with a workforce that represents the underlying population of the geographic region will help advance the field more efficiently and effectively for all people.

Dr. Anuraj Dhillon
Reason for Joining BEACoN
"Being an international student, I can relate to the experiences of underrepresented students and how challenging it could be to navigate the education system in the US. "I have been a full-time faculty member at Cal Poly for 17 years. I have institutional knowledge and experience from my almost-30 years of experience in higher education. I already, informally mentor several students that are seen as "at risk" and try to meet with them at least once per quarter to see how they are doing. I believe that some students need support beyond the typical classroom interaction and enjoy being able to provide that for them. "

"Working alongside a mentor can change your life. It changed mine. I seek research assistants who have had less exposure to research, who don't often see researchers who look like them or share their experiences. "In graduate school, I benefited greatly from mentors who, quite literally, saw me when I felt invisible, encouraged me when I felt lost and were there for me at certain critical times when I thought I would not make it. After many years I have become a faculty member who loves his teaching and research. At each phase of my education, I have had opportunities, support and role models that were necessary for me to succeed. I choose to mentor a student as part of the BEACoN Mentors Program at Cal Poly and give them opportunities because as I experienced it my self, quality mentoring greatly enhances students' chances for success. Mentoring is important; not only because of the knowledge and skills students can learn from mentors but also because mentoring provides professional socialization and personal support to facilitate success in undergraduate and graduate schools and beyond. "While not officially "out" as an undergrad, I benefited immensely from faculty who knew me better than I knew myself, yet who knew that what I needed most was someone to listen. They helped me to discover that I could not only survive hatred and rejection, but thrive in spite of or perhaps because of it. I've also been "teaching" since junior high, as a result of my rural southern school's short-lived program for self-directed exploration and learning. And from that time onward I never ever wanted to do anything else once I realized how the mutual exchange of ideas can enrich, heal, and liberate even amidst the most unfavorable circumstances. Finally, thanks to a handful of teachers in my own life, the desire for social justice, in its broadest sense, informs every class I teach and every research project I pursue. Indeed, it is the primary lens through which I see my world. I'd especially like to help other LGBTQIA individuals find their own self worth, self confidence, passions, and purpose as well, although my door is open to everyone."

Interpersonal relationships are very powerful in supporting underrepresented students and increasing the likelihood of them continuing on. I, myself, was the lucky recipient of faculty reaching out and mentoring me while I was an undergraduate student at Cal Poly in Physics. While none of those mentors were women their sincere support and presence kept me in the major and ultimately changed the course of my life. Which is a main reason I came back to Cal Poly to do the same for other women and underrepresented groups in Physics. I want to acknowledge, encourage and empower them in Physics and in their life."

Although I am fortunate enough to have the support of family for my career goals, they didn't have the experience to provide me with tangible steps to succeed academically. I see it as a critical role for my job to give back and help mentor students to ensure that they meet their academic objectives. Also, my anthropological training affords me the skills and knowledge required to understand the different cultural backgrounds that people come from and to appreciate the great diversity in human behavior and lifeways that we see here at Cal Poly and around the world.
